Steam Cleaning vs Diamond Polishing: What's the Difference?
Two very different processes that both come up when researching stone floor restoration. Here's what each one actually does.
Steam cleaning uses high-temperature vapour to lift dirt, grease and bacteria out of grout lines and porous stone without saturating the floor in liquid or chemicals. It's a deep-clean method — it removes what's sitting on and just below the surface, but it doesn't change the condition of the stone itself.
Diamond polishing is a mechanical process that uses progressively finer diamond-impregnated pads to grind down and refine the stone's actual surface. It removes scratches, etching and dullness that cleaning alone can never fix, and it's what brings a worn or etched marble or terrazzo floor back to a genuine polished finish.
In short: steam cleaning is maintenance, diamond polishing is restoration. A floor that's simply grubby needs a deep clean. A floor that's visibly dull, scratched, or etched needs polishing — and often both, in that order, for the best result.
