How do I know if my granite worktop needs resealing?

Accepted Answer

Put a few drops of water on the stone in several places and leave them for a couple of minutes. If the water beads and sits proud, the sealer is still working. If it flattens out and the stone darkens underneath it, the sealer has gone in that area and the granite is absorbing.

Will cleaning remove a dark oil mark from my granite?

Accepted Answer

Often, but not always. An oil mark is inside the stone rather than on it, so it is drawn back out with a poultice held against the surface. Recent marks usually clear. A stain that has been there for years in unsealed granite frequently lightens a long way without vanishing completely, and Julian will tell you which he thinks yours is before starting.

Can I use bleach or an antibacterial spray on granite?

Accepted Answer

Not regularly. Bleach and strong general purpose sprays break down the impregnating sealer long before they hurt the stone itself, which is why worktops cleaned that way start absorbing spills. Warm water with a pH neutral stone cleaner is what keeps the sealer alive.

Why has my polished granite gone dull?

Accepted Answer

In most cases the polish is fine and there is a film of dried detergent sitting on it. Washing-up liquid does not rinse cleanly off stone and builds up layer on layer. Taking that film off usually brings the shine straight back with no polishing needed at all.

Is granite really heatproof?

Accepted Answer

Granite handles heat far better than engineered quartz and a hot pan will not usually mark the stone. What it can do is degrade the sealer in that one spot, so that area starts absorbing before the rest of the worktop does. A trivet is still worth using.

Can you remove limescale from around my granite sink?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The important part is how. Standard limescale removers are acidic and will strip the sealer and etch the polish off the stone, so we use a non-acidic method to break down the scale without damaging the surface underneath it.

Does black granite need different treatment?

Accepted Answer

It needs more care rather than a different method. Dark granites show detergent film, water marks and buffing streaks far more obviously than speckled light ones, so the rinse and the dry off matter more. Some very dense black granites also absorb very little, which changes how much sealer they will take.

How often should granite worktops be resealed?

Accepted Answer

It depends entirely on the granite, the sealer that was used and how the kitchen is cleaned, so we test the stone rather than work to a number. A worktop cleaned with harsh sprays can need resealing far sooner than one cleaned with a neutral product.

Can you polish scratches out of granite?

Accepted Answer

Granite is hard enough that genuine scratches are rare, and most marks that look like scratches turn out to be metal transfer from a pan base, which cleans off. A real scratch or a chip in granite is stonemasonry rather than cleaning, and we will point you to that rather than attempt it.

Do you clean granite in bathrooms as well as kitchens?

Yes. Granite vanity tops, splashbacks and shelves get the same treatment, and they usually need the limescale work more than the grease work because of what happens around a basin.
