Built Up Cleaner Film
Washing-up liquid and general purpose sprays leave a soft film that scatters light and traps grease. The stone reads as dull and tired when the polish underneath is perfectly intact and simply buried.

Worktop & countertop cleaning
Granite is tough. Its sealer is not, and that is where most granite worktops start to go wrong.
Granite is one of the toughest surfaces you can put in a kitchen. It shrugs off heat, it resists scratching, and it will usually outlast the units it sits on. What it will not do is stay sealed forever.
The sealer is a consumable. Every wipe with washing-up liquid and every spray of general purpose kitchen cleaner takes it back a little further, until water stops beading and starts sinking in as a dark patch that fades as it dries. We clean the stone properly, draw out what has already soaked in where the surface allows, and reseal it so spills sit on top long enough to be wiped away.
Acidic cleaners strip sealer and dull polished granite, so nothing acidic goes near your worktop at any stage.
A simple water test across the top shows where the sealer has gone and where it is still doing its job.

Some stains lift completely and some only lighten. You are told which you have before any work starts.
Granite fails in a handful of predictable ways. These are the ones we get called out for.
Washing-up liquid and general purpose sprays leave a soft film that scatters light and traps grease. The stone reads as dull and tired when the polish underneath is perfectly intact and simply buried.
Cooking oil, butter and olive oil soak into granite once the sealer has worn through, leaving a darker patch that will not wipe off. These are drawn back out of the stone with a poultice rather than attacked from the top.
Hard water leaves crusted scale on the stone and in the drainer grooves. The usual descalers are acidic and attack the sealer, so we take it off by a non-acidic method instead.
Cleaning without resealing leaves the stone open. Once the surface is clean and fully dry an impregnating sealer goes back in, so the next spill stays on the surface instead of going into it.
Julian looks at the worktop first and tests how the stone is behaving. A few drops of water on different sections show where the sealer has failed, which is nearly always worst around the sink, in front of the hob and wherever people lean. The top is then degreased and the built up film taken back, worked in sections so nothing dries before it is rinsed. Marks that have gone into the stone are treated separately, because lifting an old oil stain takes a drawing treatment and time rather than more scrubbing. The stone has to be completely dry before the sealer goes on, so sealing is the last thing that happens.
This suits polished and honed granite worktops, islands, upstands and granite splashbacks in kitchens and utility rooms, and the granite tops on bathroom vanity units. Two limits are worth knowing up front. An oil mark that has been sitting in bare granite for years often lightens rather than disappears, and nothing brings it fully back to the surrounding colour. Chips along an edge, a crack through the slab or a seam that has opened up are a stonemason's job rather than a cleaning job, and Julian will say so at the assessment rather than take the work on.

Had 2 patios, side passage and drive powerwashed and treated. Patios and side passage were also re-grouted with cement. Julian's workmanship is outstanding.
