Should Porcelain Patios Be Sealed?
Porcelain is one of the least porous paving materials around, so does it actually need sealing? The honest answer, and where sealant still helps.
Porcelain tiles are fired at extremely high temperatures, which makes them dense and largely non-porous. Unlike natural stone, the tile itself rarely needs sealing to stop staining or water absorption.
The grout joints are a different story. Grout is porous, and on an outdoor porcelain patio it's usually the joints that pick up algae, moss, and staining long before the tiles do.
Sealing the grout lines — rather than the whole surface — is generally the more useful job, and it keeps re-cleaning intervals much longer between visits.
The other reason porcelain patios look tired is haze: a cement or grout residue left on the surface from installation that never fully cleaned off. That's a deep clean issue, not a sealing one, and it's often mistaken for the tile itself being dull.
