Composite worktops are resin bonded surfaces, made by blending a mineral filler with an acrylic or polyester resin and casting it into a solid sheet. Corian is the name most people know and there are plenty of others built the same way. They are seamless, warm to the touch, completely non-porous, and they behave nothing like stone.
The trade off is softness. A composite top scratches where granite would not, it will scorch under a hot pan, and matt finishes develop a polished sheen wherever people work. The upside is much bigger than the downside, because unlike quartz and granite, solid surface can usually be abraded and refinished in place. Damage that would be permanent in engineered quartz is often entirely repairable here.

Dulled and Shiny Working Areas
Matt composite develops a burnished patch where hands and cloths pass most often, and it reads as a stain that will not come off. Evening the sheen out across the whole top solves what cleaning alone never can.
Staining in Matt Finishes
Coffee, tea, turmeric and red wine mark matt solid surface far more than gloss. Because the material is non-porous these usually sit shallow enough to come away with the surface treatment.
Integrated Sinks and Drainer Grooves
Moulded composite sinks and the drainer grooves cut into the top collect limescale, tea staining and scratching. They are cleaned and refinished alongside the worktop so the whole thing matches.
How Composite Is Cleaned and Refinished
Julian starts by working a hidden section, normally under a kettle or at the back of a run, and finishing it to the sheen the rest of the top currently has. That gives you a like for like comparison on your own worktop before anything else is touched. From there the surface is degreased, then abraded with pads chosen to suit the finish, moving evenly across the whole top rather than only over the damaged patch, because a locally repaired area on solid surface stands out badly if the surrounding sheen is not brought with it. Integrated sinks and drainer grooves are done at the same time so the finish is continuous.
This covers Corian and other solid surface worktops, islands, upstands, splashbacks, window boards and moulded composite sinks, in kitchens, utility rooms and bathrooms. The limits are worth stating plainly. A scorch that has burnt through the colour of the sheet, a deep gouge, and any crack running from a sink cut out or an appliance opening are fabricator repairs, not refinishing. Gloss finishes are considerably harder to match than matt ones. And on an older top that has had years of sunlight through a window, a refinished area can read very slightly differently from a shaded section, because the material itself has aged unevenly.
