Worn and Patchy Sealer
Topical sealers and waxes wear through first in front of the sink and the hob, so the surface goes blotchy and water stops beading in exactly the places that need it most.

Worktop & countertop cleaning
Concrete only works because of what is on top of it. When the sealer wears through, the worktop starts absorbing everything.
A concrete worktop is cast rather than quarried, and it is porous the whole way through. Left bare it will absorb oil, wine, coffee and even water, and because there is free lime in the cement, anything acidic will etch it much as it would marble. Sealer is not an optional extra on concrete, it is the reason the worktop works at all.
Concrete is also a material that changes. Colour varies across a cast, fine crazing appears as it cures, and the surface deepens and softens in character over the years. That is patina, and it is usually what people who choose concrete were after in the first place. Our job is to strip back what has worn out, clean what is underneath and reseal it, without pretending the top can be made to look like a factory slab.
Fresh sealer laid on top of worn, greasy sealer just locks the problem in. The failed layer comes off first.
Acidic cleaners etch concrete the way they etch marble, so nothing acidic is used at any stage of the job.
Colour variation and hairline crazing are the material rather than a fault. The top is cleaned without trying to sand its character off.
Julian looks at the worktop, works out what it is sealed with and tells you what can realistically be improved before quoting.
Concrete tops usually come to us for one of four reasons.
Topical sealers and waxes wear through first in front of the sink and the hob, so the surface goes blotchy and water stops beading in exactly the places that need it most.
Once a spill gets past the sealer it is in the concrete. These are drawn back out with a poultice where possible, and they usually lighten considerably even when they do not clear entirely.
Lemon, vinegar and limescale remover leave a dulled, slightly rougher mark on sealed and unsealed concrete alike, because the cement itself reacts. The affected area is cleaned back and resealed rather than scrubbed harder.
Once the top is clean and completely dry a sealer goes in, and where the original finish used a wax over the top of it, that is reapplied so the look matches what you had before.
The first thing Julian works out is what is actually on the surface, because a penetrating sealer and a topical film need different handling and a waxed top needs the wax off before anything else happens. The worn coating is stripped, the concrete underneath is deep cleaned with non-acidic products, and absorbed marks are treated individually with a poultice while the top is still bare and able to give them up. The concrete then has to dry properly, which on a thick cast top is not a quick business, before the new sealer goes on. Wax, where the finish calls for it, goes on last over the cured sealer.
This suits cast concrete worktops, islands, upstands, splashbacks and cast concrete sinks, indoors and in garden kitchens. What will not change is the character of the material. Colour variation across a cast, hairline crazing from curing and the general deepening of tone over the years are inherent to concrete and cleaning does not remove them, nor should it. A stain that soaked deep into a top that spent years unsealed may lighten considerably rather than disappear. And a structural crack, as opposed to surface crazing, is a job for whoever cast the top rather than for us.

Had 2 patios, side passage and drive powerwashed and treated. Patios and side passage were also re-grouted with cement. Julian's workmanship is outstanding.
