Quartzite is a natural stone, formed when sandstone is compressed and recrystallised until the grains fuse together. It is genuinely hard, harder than marble and hard enough to blunt a knife, which is why it gets sold as the low maintenance alternative that still looks like marble.
The catch is the name. A good number of slabs sold in showrooms as quartzite are nothing of the sort, they are dolomite or a dolomitic marble, and those etch on contact with lemon and vinegar exactly the way marble does. Quartzite is also constantly confused with engineered quartz, which is a manufactured resin product needing close to the opposite treatment. So the first job on a quartzite worktop is establishing what is actually in front of us.

Deep Cleaning the Surface
Once the material is known the top is cleaned with a product it can tolerate, taking off cooking grease, detergent film and the general dulling that builds up across a busy worktop.
Absorbed Staining
Some quartzites take up oil and wine far more readily than their hardness suggests. Where a mark has gone in, it is drawn back out with a poultice rather than attacked from the top.
Sealing
Most quartzite benefits from an impregnating sealer and some varieties need it badly. Whether yours does, and how thirsty it is, comes out of the water test rather than a rule of thumb.
How We Handle a Quartzite Worktop
The visit opens with two quick tests in a corner that stays hidden, usually behind an appliance or at the back of a run. One checks whether the surface reacts to a mild acid, which is what separates real quartzite from a dolomitic marble wearing its name. The other checks how fast the stone takes up water, which decides whether it needs sealing and how much sealer it will drink. Only then does cleaning start, working in sections, with the products and the pad matched to whichever answer came back. If the slab turns out to be a marble, the job changes into a marble job and Julian will talk that through with you before going any further.
This covers quartzite worktops, islands, upstands and splashbacks, and the quartzite tops fitted on bathroom vanity units. The honest limits are these. If the stone is a mislabelled dolomitic marble and it already carries etch marks, cleaning alone will not take them out and it needs honing, which is more work than you were expecting when you rang about a clean. Genuine quartzite is hard enough that scratching is rare, but it is also brittle at the edges, so chips and cracks belong to a stonemason. And a very porous quartzite that has been left unsealed for years may hold a stain that only lightens.
