Etch Marks from Acidic Spills
The pale, dull rings left by a wine glass, a cut lemon or a splash of vinegar. The polish has been eaten away, so the surface is honed back and refinished rather than cleaned.

Worktop & countertop cleaning
Those dull rings are not stains. They are etch marks, and they come out by honing the stone, not by cleaning it.
Marble is limestone that has been recrystallised under heat and pressure, which means it is calcium carbonate the whole way through. Everything that makes marble difficult in a kitchen comes back to that single fact. Calcium carbonate reacts with acid, and a kitchen is full of acid.
Lemon juice, wine, vinegar, tomato, fizzy drinks and most supermarket bathroom sprays leave a dull mark where they sat. That is an etch, not a stain. The polished surface has been chemically dissolved, so no cleaner will wipe it away and scrubbing harder only wastes an afternoon. It comes out by honing and re-polishing the stone back to an even finish, which is a different job from cleaning and one we do.
An etch mark is removed by working the surface back with diamond abrasives, which is restoration rather than cleaning.
Nothing acidic touches your marble at any point, including the products used for the final rinse and wipe down.
Marble can be left honed and matt or brought up to a polish. Julian agrees the finish with you before any machine goes on the top.
A sealer stops oil soaking in. It does not stop etching, and we will not tell you otherwise to sell one.
Marble arrives with two separate problems, and they need two separate answers.
The pale, dull rings left by a wine glass, a cut lemon or a splash of vinegar. The polish has been eaten away, so the surface is honed back and refinished rather than cleaned.
Marble is porous, so olive oil, butter and sauces darken it from the inside out. These are drawn back out with a poultice held against the stone, which is slow but is the only method that reaches down into it.
Fine scratches, cutlery marks and general dulling across the whole top are worked out with progressively finer diamond abrasives, then finished either matt or polished depending on what you want to live with.
An impregnating sealer goes in once the surface is finished and fully dry. It buys you time to wipe a spill up before it soaks in, which matters far more on marble than it does on granite.
Julian assesses the top first and works a small trial area, so you can see the finish on your own stone before the whole worktop is done. The marble is cleaned with pH neutral products, then the etched and scratched areas are honed with diamond abrasives, starting coarse enough to take the damage out and stepping down through finer grades until the surface is even across the slab rather than patchy where the work was concentrated. If you want gloss instead of matt, a polishing powder brings the shine up at the end. Sealing is last, because a sealer applied over stone that is still damp traps the moisture underneath it.
This works on marble worktops, islands, splashbacks, bathroom vanity tops and marble tables. Two things are worth being straight about. First, restoration resets the surface but it does not change what marble is, so the next lemon will etch it again unless spills are wiped promptly, and a honed matt finish hides new etching far better than a high gloss ever will. Second, deep chips, cracks running through the slab and old yellowing that has gone right down into the stone are past a cleaning and honing job, and Julian will say so at the assessment rather than afterwards.

Had 2 patios, side passage and drive powerwashed and treated. Patios and side passage were also re-grouted with cement. Julian's workmanship is outstanding.
